Auburn Women’s Basketball vs. UAB
Post-Game Quotes
November 13, 2015

Auburn Head Coach Terri Williams-Flournoy

On second half performance…
“I thought in the second half the energy level was much better. It is to be expected playing your first game. They have to get the jitters out because we haven’t played in a while. They have to get used to being back on the floor. We have a few people playing different positions. Once we got all of the cobwebs out, we were much better in the second half. Somebody over here (Tra’Cee Tanner) went beast mode like she should have.”

On Janiah McKay…
“She got really comfortable, didn’t she? That is her game. I thought she did a really good job penetrating and getting to the basket. She sometimes went to the basket, and sometimes she kicked it back out. When you are a freshman and this is your first game and you go for 20 points and seven assists, you can’t be too upset about that. One turnover is great for a freshman in her first game.”

On shutting down the three’s in the second half…
“We tried to get out to them a little quicker, because they shot it quick. Number four and number 20, their release was quick. We knew that coming in. They are a very good 3-point shooting team. They made their runs and we made our runs. It was definitely a game of runs. In the second half we got out there and contested the three a little bit better than in the first half.”

On Neydja Petithomme…
“Neydja Petithomme has decided to pursue other opportunities. That was her decision; it was not our decision. As the Auburn women’s basketball team, we just deal with it and move on. We have to come out here and win some basketball games.”

Senior center Tra’Cee Tanner

On the difference between last year and this year’s team…
“We are returning all five starters from last year. I think we have a different mentality. Honestly, our freshmen came in with the same mentality, it wasn’t anything to teach them. You don’t have to teach us to play hard, you don’t have to teach us to play with effort or heart, we just kind of go out there and do it. Coach always speaks on ‘even if you are in the wrong place, the effort will take you a long way.’ We see that in our defense a lot, so we have a different mentality- a go-getter mentality.”

On the team’s improved conditioning…
“Our conditioning this year is definitely different from how it has been in the past couple years as a group collectively, not even individually. It is great that we can have a good rotation throughout the whole team and have everybody being able to play. Our defense definitely entitled us to being in good conditioning shape. We worked really hard in the preseason to get in shape.”

On changing the women’s game from two halves to four quarters…
“I think for us, it works well because we can go harder than we did last year because we have that media timeout at five minutes. We know that if we go hard for the first five minutes- we started out 7-0 in the first minute, minute-half, so we know we can go hard, make them turn the ball over, make our runs and then we’ll get that break and we can go again. We have a good rotation for us to be able to do that because everybody can play on our team. I think it is a good thing for us, no mercy on our competitors, so I think it is a good thing for our team. We have adjusted to it pretty well.

Junior guard Brandy Montgomery

On the difference between last year and this year’s team…
“Our freshmen. They are really confident, fearless, coming in knowing they can help this team. They are playing their game, I think they are a big help this year.”

On the change in the women’s game from two halves to four quarters…
“The media timeout is longer so we can go hard, hard, hard and then we get that break and get longer to recover. It helps us because of the way we play.”

UAB Associate Head Coach Taren Martin

“I thought we had a great first three quarters. We had mostly great effort. Saw a lot of great things we just need to shore up on. I think overall we looked pretty good. This game isn’t going to break us. It was a good first game; now we’ve get on and go on to Belmont.”
